About Bitcoin
Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency, launched in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It runs on a public ledger maintained by miners, who compete to add new blocks roughly every ten minutes.
Its supply is capped at 21 million coins. The reward for mining a block is cut in half about every four years in an event called the "halving," which slows the creation of new bitcoin. Each bitcoin divides into 100 million units called satoshis, or sats; our satoshi converter handles the math.
US investors can hold bitcoin directly on an exchange or in their own wallet, or get price exposure through spot bitcoin ETFs, which have traded on US exchanges since January 2024.
