Average cost vs. tax cost basis
Your average cost is a quick way to see whether you're ahead overall. For taxes, the IRS doesn't let you use a simple average for crypto. Each sale is matched to specific purchases, by default first-in, first-out (FIFO) unless you identify specific units. That means your taxable gain on a sale can be different from what this average suggests.
From 2026, brokers report cost basis on Form 1099-DA for coins you bought on that platform. Keep your own records for anything bought elsewhere or moved between wallets. Crypto tax software can do the matching for you.
Need cost basis for your taxes?
The IRS matches each sale to specific purchases, not an average. Tax software does that matching for you.
