Market price vs. what you actually get
This converter uses the market price: the average price at which a coin is trading across major exchanges. When you buy, the exchange adds a trading fee and usually a spread, so you receive less than the amount shown here. On small purchases the difference can be 1% to 4%. Use the buying-cost calculator to see the real amount on each US exchange.
Converting one coin to another
Pick a coin on both sides to see a cross rate, such as how much ETH one bitcoin is worth. Most US exchanges handle a coin-to-coin trade as a sale of the first coin and a purchase of the second, and the IRS treats it the same way: trading one coin for another is a taxable sale. See our crypto tax guide.
Stablecoins
USDT and USDC are designed to stay at $1.00, so converting dollars to a stablecoin gives roughly the same number. They can drift slightly from $1 and carry issuer risk.
