About Ethereum
Ethereum is a blockchain that runs programs called smart contracts. Those programs power stablecoins, decentralized exchanges, lending apps and NFTs. Ether (ETH) is the coin used to pay transaction fees on the network.
Since 2022 Ethereum has used proof of stake: instead of miners, validators lock up ETH to secure the network and earn rewards. Many US exchanges let customers stake ETH, though not in every state. See our staking guide before you start.
Ether has no fixed maximum supply. New ETH is issued to validators, and part of every transaction fee is permanently destroyed.
