What affects staking rewards

The network rate changes. Rewards depend on how much of the coin is staked and how busy the network is. Treat any rate as a rough average, not a promise.

The platform's commission. Exchanges keep part of what the network pays: Coinbase and Gemini disclose commissions up to 35%, Robinhood 25%. The calculator subtracts this first.

Price risk. Earning 3% more coins doesn't help much if the coin's price falls 30%. Values here use today's price throughout.

Where you live. Several exchanges don't offer staking in California, Maryland, New Jersey or Wisconsin. Check the exchange comparison.

How staking rewards are taxed

Under IRS Revenue Ruling 2023-14, staking rewards are ordinary income in the year you gain control of them, valued at the market price on that day. That value becomes your cost basis, so when you later sell those coins you may owe capital gains tax on any further rise. Read our staking guide.

Staking rewards are taxable income

Tax software tracks every reward at its value on the day you received it.
