How to choose an exchange
Start with your state. Several platforms don't serve New York, and Binance.US is unavailable in 12 states. There's no point comparing fees on an exchange you can't use.
Then compare the total cost, not the advertised fee. "Commission-free" apps still charge a spread: the gap between the price you pay and the market price. Our buying-cost calculator adds both together.
Pay by bank when you can. Debit-card purchases commonly cost 1.5% to 4% extra.
Plan to grow into advanced trading. On Coinbase, Kraken and Binance.US, the order-book screen costs a fraction of the one-tap buy button.
Decide where your coins will live. Every platform here lets you withdraw to your own wallet. For larger holdings, read our guide to hardware wallets.
