How crypto is taxed in the US
The IRS treats crypto as property. You owe tax when you sell crypto for dollars, trade one coin for another, or spend crypto on goods or services. Buying with dollars and moving coins between your own wallets are not taxable.
Gains on coins held one year or less are taxed at your ordinary income rate (10% to 37%). Gains on coins held more than one year get the lower long-term rates of 0%, 15% or 20%. Staking rewards count as ordinary income when you receive them.
2026 long-term capital gains brackets (taxable income)
| Filing status | 0% up to | 15% up to | 20% above |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | $49,450 | $545,500 | $545,500 |
| Married filing jointly | $98,900 | $613,700 | $613,700 |
| Head of household | $66,200 | $579,600 | $579,600 |
| Married filing separately | $49,450 | $306,850 | $306,850 |
Losses
Losses offset gains first. If your losses are larger, you can deduct up to $3,000 of the net loss from other income ($1,500 if married filing separately) and carry the rest forward to future years. As of October 2026, the wash-sale rule doesn't apply to crypto, though a bill to change that has advanced in Congress.
Form 1099-DA
Starting with 2025 transactions, US brokers send Form 1099-DA showing your gross proceeds. For coins bought on or after January 1, 2026, they also report your cost basis. You still have to report every sale on Form 8949, including on platforms that don't send a form.
What this estimate leaves out
State income tax, the alternative minimum tax, phase-outs of credits and deductions, and the exact modified AGI used for the 3.8% net investment income tax (we approximate it from your taxable income plus gains). Treat the result as a starting point and confirm with a tax professional or crypto tax software.
