Why people count in sats
With bitcoin priced in the tens of thousands of dollars, small amounts are awkward to write: $10 is a long string of zeros after the decimal point. Satoshis, named after Bitcoin's creator, make small amounts readable. 1 BTC = 100,000,000 sats, so 1 sat = 0.00000001 BTC.
You don't need to buy a whole bitcoin. Most US exchanges let you buy as little as $1 to $10 worth.
Gwei and Ethereum fees
Ethereum network fees ("gas") are quoted in gwei. 1 ETH = 1,000,000,000 gwei, and 1 gwei = 1,000,000,000 wei, the smallest unit of ether.
